Aisha: Shaming Her In-Laws Resulted in Getting Her Nose Cut Off

What happened to Aisha is a reason why I could never buy into Islam, why I will never allow Islam to be part of my life or that of my community.

A 19-year-old woman is mutilated because she "she shamed her husband's family."

By custom, her father pledged her hand in marriage when she was only 8 years old. But Aisha took exception and decided that she didn't want to be married When she was 16 to a member of a group whom she characterizes as part of the Taliban with whom she lived for two years.

Her two years included torture and imprisonment, and as her husband was off fighting, she didn't meet him. Instead she stayed with his family.

Eventually she decided to run away as she "couldn't take it anymore," but running away is treated like a crime if you are a woman in Afghanistan.
